| Title: | Adopt-A-Minefield`s Night of 1000 Dinners |
| Date: | 2004-11-07 |
| Posted By: | Cathy Nelson |
Through connections in the Vietnamese adoption community, I have become involved with Adopt-A-Minefield -- a program of the United Nations Association of the USA which raises funds for mine clearance and survivor assistance in Vietnam, Cambodia, Croatia, Afghanistan and other conflict-ravaged countries.
As part of the organization`s "Night of 1000 Dinners", I have organized a fundraising event that will take place on Sunday, November 7th, from 5-8 pm at Ba Mien Viet Food Court at 4941 N. Broadway in Chicago. The highlight of the event will be a performance by Jared Rehberg - a NY singer-songwriter who came to the US as a Vietnamese war orphan on Operation Babylift.
During my trip to Vietnam to adopt Grace, I saw firsthand all too many victims of landmines. Unfortunately, reports indicate that there has been no marked decrease in the number of landmine casualties in Vietnam in the 20 years following the war. It is estimated that 3.5 million landmines and tens of millions of other unexploded ordnance remain in Vietnam, causing an average of 180 casualties each month -- many of whom are children. We`ve heard a great deal about "Vietnam" in the news lately and the word is almost always used as shorthand for war. "Vietnam" to me represents a beautiful country with a rich culture and a people that above all else values children.
See http://www.fcvnchicago.org/1000DinnersInvite.pdf
for an invitation to the event. I hope that you and your family can join Grace and I for the Night of 1000 Dinners so we can share a bit of Vietnam with you in support this worthy cause. Thank you.
